10 Resume Proofreading Techniques You Should Try

10 Resume Proofreading Techniques You Should Try10 Resume Proofreading Techniques You Should TrySearching for and finding the perfect job is a time consuming task. And, when you finally come across that dream job with the description that seems as though it was written just for you, the last thing you want to do is mess up the opportunity by submitting an error-ridden resume.Mistakes are easy to miss when youre writing your resume and cover letter, but they can almost guarantee your resume a one-way trip to the trash can when those errors are spotted by an employer. Here are some fantastic techniques you can use to help catch all of those problematic errors before you send off your resume.Give a voice to your words. You may bedrngnisice that when youre reading something in your head, you tend to skim through it more quickly, making it easy to skip over spelling mistakes and let missing words or grammatical errors go unnoticed. But, when you read your words out loud, it forces you to s low down a little more and focus on each word. What youve written may sound great and make perfect sense when youre reading it to yourself in your head, but if something doesnt make sense when youre reading it out loud, it certainly isnt going to make sense to an employer reading it. By putting a voice to your words, you can also hear if something sounds strange or if theres a better word that could be used in place of one that just doesnt fit quite right. It gives you a different perspective on your writing, that lets mistakes stand out a little more so you can catch them and fix them.Checking 1,2,3.Who really knows every single grammar rule there is out there? You may be a killer writer, and great at expressing yourself in words, but when it comes to grammar, its a totally different ballgame. But, when an employer picks out grammar mistakes in your resume, it can drop your credibility like a rock especially if youve touted yourself as a perfectionist, whos meticulous attention to detail is like no other. Get rid of those grammatical errors, and present your best self with a pristine, grammatically perfect resume. An online proofreader, like 1Checker, can help you avoid those potentially embarrassing mistakes that could cost you the opportunity of landing that job. Its both a spelling and grammar checker that keeps your writing natural sounding, letting you make a great first impression.Spellcheck cannot be trusted. There are some benefits to using an automated spell checker, and theyll catch the very obvious mistakes. But, there are things that a computer just cant catch. Something could very well be spelled properly, but in the context youve used it, is totally wrong. Youre and your are both spelled right, but depending on what youre trying to say, you could be using the incorrect word.Running your resume through a spell checker is a good start, but its always beneficial to have someone else read through it also. Expert proofreaders are a great resource, wh en you cant trust an automated spell checker, and BoomEssays has a team of professionals ready to help you. Even if your lingo is job-specific, they wont have any problems, since each proofreader is an experienced pro in their field of work and will know exactly what youre trying to say.Approach it from a different direction.Once again, reading your resume left to right and top to bottom can leave you missing some mistakes youve made. ur brain fills in some blanks when we read, so we dont always notice spelling errors, since our smart little brains fix things for us as we go. Try looking at it from a different direction namely, backwards. Read everything youve written backwards to quickly find spelling mistakes. No, what youre reading isnt going to make much sense, but because its not going to flow together quickly and easily, your brain forces you to slow down and examine each word. Its harder to automatically fill in the blanks, because the sentences arent linear and sensical. Yo u wont be able to spot grammar errors like this, but spelling mistakes will be a lot easier to see. Get another view of your work using the TypoVision proofreading tool, that displays your text in an unfamiliar way. Doing this, much like reading it backwards, makes it easier to spot those spelling mistakes, because your brain is forced to work in a different way.Take some time off.As long as youve got the time to spare, its always a good idea to take a step back, put your resume away for a little while and come back to it later. When you look at something too much, you can start to overlook even the most glaring mistakes, because youve become too familiar with it. Giving yourself a day, or even a few hours, away from your resume lets you reset your mind. Perhaps what you thought sounded great before, all of a sudden doesnt make much sense. When youre writing, its easy to let mistakes slip by, because in your head, what youve put together makes perfect sense. You can also enlist the help of another set of eyes to make sure everything reads as well as you think it does. EssayRoo can match you with a professional proofreader, whos also got experience in the field of work youre interested in. That means theyll be able to tailor the language in your resume to the job, making a lasting impression on the person tasked with reading through the resumes being submitted.Mimic their style.Certain things may not matter much to you when youre writing your resume, like putting a comma at the end of your bullet points. But, to someone whos reading and assessing your resume, those little things could make a difference. Mimicking the style of the hiring manager will leave a good first impression on them they may not notice that youre using the same stylistic elements as them, but theyll probably notice if you dont. Check out the job posting, and use the same style preferences that you see there, since the hiring manager was likely the person putting together that job posting. When theyre reading something that is reflective of what theyre used to seeing and writing themselves, it makes for a more comfortable read and they wont be fixated on the things they would have done differently.Get a real person to read it.Sometimes its easier to just copy and paste your text into an automated spelling and grammar checker, and while a computerized tool can catch many errors, its not likely to catch every single one of them. Thats where a real, live person can really be an asset. People can read context, where computers just cant. And, while a sentence may be spelled perfectly, when its read by a person, it may not make sense or be easy to comprehend. When youre reading your own writing, youve come to be familiar with it, and you know what youre meaning to say, so its so easy to miss things. Someone whos laying their eyes on your writing for the first time is better equipped to notice those mistakes, because they dont know what youre trying to say, so if it doesnt m ake sense, it will stand out to them. If you are looking for a real person, who is also an expert in that line of work, to help with your proofreading, check out UK Writings. Their proofreading services will pair you up with someone who knows exactly what to look for, and what type of improvements can be made to the language of your resume to make it the most impactful.Hard copy review.Staring at a computer screen for too long can cause you to go a little crossed-eyed and start missing even the easiest mistake to spot. Try printing out your resume to see an actual hard copy that you can review. Not only will you get to look at it away from the computer screen, but youll also see what itll look like if an employer decides to print it. Make sure nothing funky happens, like the margins shifting. Before hitting the print button, get a quick review from Proofread Bot, that can pick out any errors and make additional suggestions for improving your writing.Get the personal stuff right. We u sually just assume that weve typed out our personal information perfectly, since we know it so well. But mistakes can happen, and even the smallest error here could actually cost you the job. Get one number wrong in your phone number or misspell your email address, and an employer wont be able to contact you, no matter how interested they are.Narrow your focus.Trying to catch every single grammar, spelling and stylistic mistake youve made can be tough if youre trying to do it all at once. Break things up by just focusing on one area at a time read it once for spelling, then again for grammar. It may take a little more time, but youre more likely to catch the mistakes in there if youre specifically looking for one thing. Get yourself started by turning to Slick Write for some suggestions on how to boost the level of your writing. You can even narrow what it searches for, including commonly confused words and extra spaces.Ensure that what youre sending out to employers is absolutely perfect and error free. With the help of these techniques and valuable resources, you can put your best foot forward and give yourself the best chance at landing that dream job.Share Your Feedback or Ideas in the Comments

10 of the Most Demanding Jobs in Tech

10 of the Most Demanding Jobs in Tech 10 of the Most Demanding Jobs in Tech A host of tech jobs rank high for work-life balance and job satisfaction. Others, though, place tough demands on workers in terms of time constraints, responsibilities, and how often employees are on call. Whenever you ask people to rate the challenges or difficulties of their jobs, you need to take the responses with a pinch of salt. However, you can get an overall impression of what it takes to work in certain positions. Here are the top 10 most demanding jobs in tech based on surveys by Emerson Network Power and CareerCast. The surveys take into account leadership, on-call time, travel, physical demands, and multitasking, to name a few. Results are in no particular order. Chief Information Officers: As the top IT professional in most organizations, the Chief Information Officer (CIO) must be available at all times. That includes weekends and vacations so that they can handle emergencies. Motivating employees and building a strong IT department is on the top of most CIOs list of on-the-job demands.IT Procurement Specialists: The titles vary, ranging from analysts and consultants to supervisors and buyers. Those responsible for IT procurement say they must work to their clients schedules and dont always have time to do their best work. Moreover, tight schedules leave little opportunity to research the latest technologies. IT Managers Directors: Few IT managers or directors work from 9 to 5. Equipment maintenance or software migrations are often done overnight or on weekends. Managers must be on hand to ensure problem-free outcomes. The person in this position is often responsible for the largest share of a companys IT budget and for most of the companys planning. Budget preparation and meetings mean a lot of late nights. The Bureau of Labor Statistics found approximately 24 percent of IT managers, directors, and CIOs work more than 50 hours each week. Operations Specialists: Their business cards may say, technician, analyst, manager or specialist. Regardless, those in daily IT operations work with restrictive deadlines and troubleshoot problems late into the night. Mistakes aren’t tolerated networks need to run around the clock, and a single oversight could leave thousands of people without access to data.Software Engineers: Software engineers need to meet tight project deadlines. Work must fulfill both client and company expectations for new products and services. And like many jobs in tech, a lack of talent in the job market adds to the pressure on current workers. Demand for the position is forecast to grow 17 percent by 2024. Application/Software Developers: Application developers and software developers handle more than design. They make sure software runs without errors and functions as it should. Around one-third of developers surveyed reported they didnt have sufficient time to do quality work. Over a quarter couldn’t plan tasks because of time limitations. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates a quarter of software developers work over 40 hours each week.Database Managers: Always on call and always working on several tasks at once, a typical day in the life of a database manager involves working under pressure to troubleshoot problems as soon as possible. Then they have to finish other projects with deadlines just as tight. Database managers often feel they don’t have enough time to produce the best results or analyze tasks. Web Developer: The most stressful tech job on CareerCasts list was for web developers. The job is expected to grow 27 percent by 2024. That’s much faster than average, so skilled developers have to meet skyrocketing demand. Working on different projects at the same time is not unusual. The job has its rewards, though, with one SkilledUp survey reporting 88 percent of web developers are satisfied with their jobs.Network Administrator: Systems and networks carry any company, and as businesses grow, networks become larger and more complex. Demand for network admins is on the rise as firms invest in better systems. Network administrators need to have excellent communication skills to relay information to other teams. They are available 24/7 to handle emergencies, and they must be able to multitask and remain calm in high-stress situations. IT Security Specialists: IT security professionals ranked the highest in the Emerson Network Power survey because they need to make important decisions on the spot 89 percent agree or strongly agree with this description. More than half of IT security specialists believe their success depends on things outside their control. However, they are directly accountable for the security of company networks. Conclusion A job in a demanding position doesn’t mean rewards diminish. Many thrive in these positions because of their responsibilities, and they score job satisfaction high in surveys. Experts enjoy the challenge and want to put their skills to the test. If you’re on a specific career path or plan to take up a new role, gather relevant information on what’s required of someone in that position. Brawny Origami-Inspired Robots

Brawny Origami-Inspired Robots Brawny Origami-Inspired Robots Brawny Origami-Inspired Robots We often link being strong with being unyielding, but when researchers at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology wanted to make their soft robots stronger, they found that folding them was the way to go. The origami-inspired actuators the research team designed can lift as much as 1,000 times their own weight. These artificial muscles could soon find their way into wearable electronics, surgical equipment, or insect-like microbots. Anything thats foldable could be used for these actuators, says Daniel Vogt, research engineer at Harvard Universitys Wyss Institute, who was a co-author on a paper released about the actuators. Paper for origami is often what allows us to try some ideas and then move on to other materials. Daniel Vogt, Harvard Universitys Wyss Institute Another show of strength from an origami-inspired muscle. The researchers built artificial muscles using different flexible materials like paper, metal, and plastic sheets as a corrugated inner skeleton that could fold up into a specific shape. They encased the skeleton in a skin-like plastic casing, and when they applied a vacuum to the casing, air pressure would fold the flexible material into a much smaller volume. In one example, a zig-zag sheet of plastic was placed in a gripper, and applying a vacuum caused the sheet to slowly fold upward. Using the same process, the gripper could pull up the full weight of an automobile tire. The researchers also programmed the artificial musclesto pick up bananas and bottles. Read about the latest in robotic technologies on ASME.org. Depending on the skeletons design, it is possible for the artificial muscles to shapeshift in multiple directions. Some of the initial origami designs were tested on paper and then applied to metal or plastic sheets, Vogt says. Paper for origami is often what allows us to try some ideas and then move on to other materials, he says. There are various potential applications for these actuators as the technology unfolds. For instance, since these artificial muscles are both strong and supple, they could find use in industrial settings. In a car factory you dont want your gripper to touch the car because it is very expensive stuff, says Shuguang Li, a postdoctoral researcher at MIT and another co-author of the paper. For this kind of application, you can use our soft gripper to manipulate a product that is fragile or expensive. The researchers are adding the actuators to power gloves to supplement grip strength for those with muscle diseases. Although the design is derived from origami, dont look for paper to start folding itself into cranes. Origami geometry looks beautiful, but when you make something for engineering use, its a little overcomplex for the joints and connections. We borrowed the artificial muscle idea from origami geometry but we also simplified it, Li says. For Further Discussion

Overhaul Your Online Brand in 5 Easy Steps

Overhaul Your Online Brand in 5 Easy Steps Overhaul Your Online Brand in 5 Easy Steps Google yourself regularly and edit your online presence to support your job-search efforts.Whether you know it or not, every one of you has an online brand. A  Jobvite social recruiting survey  found that 85 percent of HR professionals and recruiters said that a positive online presence has influenced a hiring decision. On the flip side, 70 percent have turned down a candidate based on something they found about them online. If you’re not managing your online brand, you could unknowingly hurt your chances of landing that dream job. Take these five steps to overhaul your online brand.1.  Have you Googled?According to a   recent survey  by Ladders, more than 35 percent of you only Google yourselves on an annual basis, and a whopping 16 percent have never Googled yourselves. If you fall within either of these categories, today’s the day we’re going to change that. Do me a favor and Google your name today and see what comes up on the first page of results. How many of the listing s are about you and support your professional brand? Once you know what you have to work with, you can take steps to make these results better.2.  What’s in a name? However you choose to represent your name,  make it consistent across every  professional  online profile and  resume. If your name is fairly common, like   Sarah Johnson, consider including the middle initial to your branding and add the URL to your LinkedIn profile to your resume. If you plan keep any social media sites, like  Facebook,  for personal use, consider changing the name to something different â€" I recommend “First Name” “Middle Name” â€" and make sure you increase the security settings so that no one outside of your inner circle will see it. Un-tag yourself from any   photos  that you wouldn’t want your future boss seeing or better yet, take them down altogether.3.  Is your eReputation tarnished? If your Google search unearths some unflattering results, you have a couple options. First, reach out to the website and try to get the article or page taken down. Second, “push down” negative results by getting your name mentioned on other web pages for the right reasons. Consider building additional professional profiles, starting a blog or Twitter feed related to your line of work, or becoming more involved with relevant professional organizations. As these fresher results get clicked on and shared, they’ll start to take the place of the older content. Also, avoid clicking multiple times on the negative article or sending it around to your friends and family. The more clicks it gets, the higher it will rise in your search results. If there’s something about you online that’s  really damaging, consider using a reputation management service like   reputation.com  or   Reputation Changer. These services can cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars to much more, depending on your needs. Speak with an associate before making any purchases.4.  Where’s your resume? If yo u’ve used job boards in the past, old versions of your resume are probably still floating around the web and sending mixed signals to recruiters. Make a list of every site you’ve used in the past for your job search, and close accounts that are no longer relevant to your search.  Upload  your new   professional resume  to the relevant sites and update any outdated information.  Make sure all of your professional profiles (including those from your professional memberships and alumni associations), are in alignment with your new resume and highlight your relevant skills, education and experience.5.  What else should you know?Be careful of what you put on the Internet â€" once it’s published, it’s there forever. Think twice before hitting the send button on every status update, tweet, and email. While you may not be able to remove all of the damaging content related to your brand, you now know what’s out there and can prepare responses for any questions that may come up du ring interviews. Now that you know how to monitor and improve your online professional brand, be more proactive going forward. Put a reminder on your calendar each month to Google your name. If you’re in a role that receives media attention or you’re planning to write articles or blog posts, set up a   Google News Alert  for your name or sign up for newsle so you know when something new pops up online.

Money Laundering Job Scams

Money Laundering Job Scams Money Laundering Job Scams Have you seen job listings that ask you to process payments or handle funds transfers for an employer? It sounds like an easy job, but it probably isnt a job at all. It is likely a scam, and one that could end up implicating you in a crime as well. These types of fake job postings are usually scams, so think twice before you apply. Legitimate companies handle payments, credit cards, and money transfer transactions directly online. There is no need for a third party to be involved, and you should never use your own bank account to conduct financial business for an employer. How Money Laundering Job Scams Work How do these scams work? Money laundering scams are some of the most common online job scams. Structuring is the practice of obscuring the origins of illegally obtained payments. The money is passed through a number of financial institutions in amounts small enough as to not attract the attention of regulatory bodies. Individuals are hired, often unaware that they are committing fraud, to move relatively small amounts of cash through their personal bank accounts in the guise of processing payments. Some things that could tip you off that something is amiss: Money launderers post jobs online offering lucrative work from home opportunities.  They send out emails saying they are hiring employees to help process payments or transfer funds.  They promise a percentage for you to use your personal bank account to collect payments and transfer them to the company.Very often, the fake employer says he is from a foreign country and thus cannot transfer funds himself, which is simply not true. Legitimate foreign companies do business in the U.S. all the time. Other Types of Fraudulent Financial Job Scams Money laundering is just one way that fraudulent employers can prey on job seekers looking for simple work from home jobs. Shell companies can be set up by individuals who counterfeit checks or cash and need to circulate it through legitimate accounts, again in amounts small enough as to not be flagged as suspicious by a financial institution. Identity thieves can use the personal information you supply when applying for a bogus job to hack their way into your accounts.   A few things that should indicate that you need to do some research and verify the legitimacy of a company:   You are asked to use your personal bank account to move what are actually stolen or bad checks, and have you keep a percentage of the money for yourself. When you deposit a bad or stolen check, you are liable to the bank. Not only will you have to pay the bank, but, because the money being transferred is typically stolen, you could be arrested for committing theft. An employer hires you for a fake job, but says he can only pay you via direct deposit. He will then ask for your account information and personal information. Rather than paying you, he will use this information to access your account. How to Avoid Money Job Scams Remember that you are in control of your job search. Take the appropriate steps every time you apply for a position. If the job looks too good to be true, be diligent in your research before you apply- because it may indeed be a financial scam. Money laundering, counterfeit, and fraud are crimes- and you can be held responsible for taking part in them, even if you weren’t told by your “employer” that what you were doing was illegal. Ignorance does not guarantee your innocence. Keep in mind: Thoroughly research companies before applying, especially if the job description includes third party money transfers.  Be aware that no legitimate company will ask you to transfer funds before meeting you in person and conducting a thorough interview and background check. Even then, it would be very unusual for third party financial transactions using your bank account to be part of a job description. While companies may offer to pay you via direct deposit, no company should ever require you to use direct deposit. Therefore, make sure you are confident of a companys legitimacy before providing them with personal information or handling money for the company. Use common sense. Ask yourself why the company would need to hire you as a layer between themselves and their customers’ payments. How to Report a ScamHave you been scammed or almost scammed? Heres information on how to report a scam, including where and how to report an employment scam. Scam Warning SignsWhats a scam and whats not? It can be really difficult to tell the difference between scams and legitimate job openings, especially when it comes to work at home jobs. Here are scam warning signs to watch for and how to spot a scam.

New Times Up initiative wants to help less famous employees deal with sexual harassment

New Time's Up initiative wants to help less famous employees deal with sexual harassment New Time's Up initiative wants to help less famous employees deal with sexual harassment The reports of Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein’s decades of sexual harassment and assault exposed abuses within the entertainment industry and started a national conversation about workplace harassment. As part of this conversation,  an open letter of solidarity was posted in November on behalf of 700,000 female farmworkers to Hollywood employees dealing with sexual harassment. On Monday, producer Shonda Rhimes, director Ava DuVernay, showrunner Jill Soloway, and actresses America Ferrera and Reese Witherspoon were among 300 Hollywood figures who posted their reply to these farmworkers with an open letter and an initiative titled Time’s Up, which outlined how they would use their privileged platform to help employees who are not Hollywood famous deal with sexual harassment.“To every woman employed in agriculture who has had to fend off unwanted sexual advances from her boss, every housekeeper who has tried to escape an assaultive guest, every janitor trapped nightly in a bui lding with a predatory supervisor, every waitress grabbed by a customer and expected to take it with a smile, every garment and factory worker forced to trade sexual acts for more shifts, every domestic worker or home health aide forcibly touched by a client, every immigrant woman silenced by the threat of her undocumented status being reported in retaliation for speaking up and to women in every industry who are subjected to indignities and offensive behavior that they are expected to tolerate to make a living: We stand with you. We support you,”  the open letter states. How Time’s Up says it plans to help employees across all sectorsThe Time’s Up initiative includes a legal defense fund to protect less privileged victims of harassment. It is reportedly being backed by $13 million in donations and is being run by the National Women’s Law Center’s Legal Network for Gender Equity. Other action items are more symbolic, such as a request for women walking the Golden Globes  re d carpet to wear black to raise awareness of the legal defense fund and the movement.Although the movement’s ranks include A-list stars, Time’s Up is being run by a loose coalition of Hollywood employees in working groups with no central leader. The New York Times reports that meetings began in October to discuss problems and solutions to accused harassers like Weinstein. One working group oversaw a new commission led by Anita Hill to end sexual harassment in media and entertainment, while one is working on proposed legislation to stop nondisclosure agreements that conceal harassment.Time will tell if the movement can lead to lasting change, but members say that’s their overarching goal.  Maria Eitel, the co-chairwoman of the Nike Foundation, who has moderated Time’s Up meetings told the Times, “They didn’t come together because they wanted to whine, or complain, or tell a story or bemoan. They came together because they intended to act.” In awe of the power of working together with the women of Hollywood. It has been so beautiful and radical! How To Create A Meaningful Internship Program

How To Create A Meaningful Internship Program How To Create A Meaningful Internship Program How To Create A Meaningful Internship Program Bennington, Contributing Writer We live in a knowledge-based economy where businesses with the best talent win. And since more and more companies are relying on internships to recruit superstars at the entry-level, theres an ever-increasing need to develop internship programs that can evaluate a candidates true potential. For us, internships have never been about bringing a bunch of college kids in to make copies and coffee, said Rick Slater, managing member for Dixon Hughes, an accounting firm that employs 35-50 interns each summer. We consider the program an 8-week job interview. Structuring Your Internship Program Slater isnt alone. For most organizations, the main objective of their internship program is to convert talented grads into full-time employees. However, this doesnt have to be left to chance. As internships have become more sophisticated, so have the strategies designed to measure their success. When starting your own program, think about how many interns you can realistically keep busy for the programs duration. Once you have an official head count, its time to develop a series of measurable benchmarks. For example: Number of FTEs (full-time employees) from the program. Number of evaluations per intern from project supervisors. As a rule, interns should work with multiple managers. This will give you a broad range of feedback while allowing your newer staff to test-drive their leadership skills. Number of projects completed per intern. While difficult to quantify, you want to factor in a few projects that test your interns ability to think critically and work in teams. Of course there will be times when interns are required to make copies and coffee, but dont fall into the all-too-common trap of using your interns for grunt work only. Give them a balance of meaningful work and administrative tasks and see how they handle both. After you complete the benchmarks for your program, refer to them often to ensure youre staying on course. You have to keep going back to those original metrics, said John Flato, President of the consulting firm Campus Strategic Partners. Otherwise, how will you know if youre succeeding? Finding Intern Candidates Now that you have a skeleton in place regarding program benchmarks, its time to find your intern programs candidates. Since no single approach works for everyone, the best method is to try a few different tactics and see what sticks. Naturally, you can post available positions on sites like Monster, where they can be displayed on MonsterCollege, but you can also reach out to your local colleges and universities as well. Identify a handful of schools in your area and just call them up and tell them what youre looking for, said Ross Herosian who directs 150 interns per year at SIRIUS XM Radio. You can also host an information session on campus. You may only have a few people show up, but those who do will be passionate about your industry. Career fairs are another great place to meet potential candidates, but if you dont have the time or the budget for on-campus recruiting, you can ask faculty members for the names of their best students. Finally, dont forget about the power of Web 2.0 in recruiting. A dedicated careers webpage, Facebook profile, and Twitter account can be very influential megaphones when it comes to raising awareness of your opportunities. Efficiently Onboarding When it comes to orientation, the best companies have at minimuma series of team-building activities, a basics overview so interns know what to expect, and an appearance by key players in their organization. Also, dont forget to include some good, old-fashioned Professionalism 101 training. We take for granted that students should know how to dress and behave properly at work, says Herosian. But, like it or not, this is often what will teach them to know better. Whether your organization has been hosting internships for decades or your program is just getting off the ground, at the end of the day, most hiring managers are in agreement that itsone of the most powerful ways to make great new hires not to mention avoid a few bad ones. I was on the phone with one of my largest clients the other day, continued Flato, and he told me that if he could only keep one program in his entire company, it would be the internships. Career Advice from 4 of Your Favorite Television Shows

Career Advice from 4 of Your Favorite Television Shows Career Advice from 4 of Your Favorite Television Shows Sometimes, there’s just nothing better than a good tv binge! Whether its catching a favorite current prime-time show, or watching your old favorites on a streaming service, chillaxing (thats what the kids call it!) on your own couch is a much-needed respite from the daily grind.   In fact, I have a few favorites that I love to watch, over and over (Im sure you do, too!)! And with the nifty invention of streaming services, we can watch a whole series or just our favorite episodes, whenever we want! Many of the most successful sitcoms of our time chronicle the lives of fictitious (but seemingly “normal”) people whose everyday struggles, embarrassments, joys, and loves are played out before our very eyes. We see the highs and lows of the personal lives of all of these characters when they fall in love, out of love, make friends, lose friends, etc. but we also see them climb the corporate ladder, slide down, and attempt to climb back up! Some of the funniest moments on primetime have been when our favorite television characters have conquered the uncertain world of unemployment and job search. Don’t believe me? Here are some helpful job tips brought to you by your favorite TV characters: Chandler Bing says… Get Organized! In the ninth season of the Emmy award-winning show Friends, former IT procurement manager Chandler Bing finally quits the job he has hated for years. Just like anyone who quits his or her job without a backup plan in place, Chandler was overwhelmed with indecision in the days following his resignation. However, in one scene, he has a conversation with his wife, Monica, and his worry was swiftly eliminated with her support: Chandler: “I mean, what am I supposed to do with myself?” Monica: “You’re supposed to find your passion in life. You can be whatever you wanna be now. It’s exciting.” Chandler: “But it’s all so overwhelming. I don’t know where to start.” Monica: “Hey, wait a second. I can help you with this. You just need to be organized. We can make a list of your qualifications, and categorize jobs by industry. There could be folders and files!” When you’re on the hunt for the perfect job, or changing careers, take the time to organize your thoughts, resume, promising job listings, and look at the criteria that are most important to YOU, for your next role. Staying organized (like Monica!) makes the process so much easier! Lily Erickson says… Be Creative! How I Met Your Mother’s Lily Erickson had always dreamed of becoming an artist, even as a young child. However, prior to getting married, Lily’s attempts to pursue her passion for painting had been unsuccessful. That all changes in season three, however, when Lily is forced to return her brush to the canvas in an attempt to sell her artwork to pay off her credit card debt. Necessity is the mother of invention, right?! Audiences watched as Lily’s artwork was displayed in an art gallery, a coffee shop, and finally on the side of the road and never sold.   However, after a few twists and turns, Lily’s painting finds its way into a veterinarian’s office, and miraculously it calmed the nervous and yelping dogs! Lily began an online business, selling her artwork to vets for their offices. Dreams do come true! The takeaway be persistent! Rejection and failure are par for the course. While job-hunting, it’s always important to keep an open mind, and be creative in your approach! George Costanza says… Get Good Advice! Seinfeld’s George Costanza quits his job in real estate in a fit of rage with absolutely no backup plan! In a conversation with his best friend, Jerry, George muses about his next move, considering jobs such as “general manager of a baseball team,” “broadcaster,” and “projectionist.” Jerry acts as George’s Greek chorus and voice of truth, pointing out the flaws in George’s logic and thinking Jerry: “So, what are you gonna do?” George: “I like sports, I could do something in sports.” Jerry: “Uh-huh, uh-huh in what capacity?” Jerry gave George the reality check he needed, she tried to decide on the best path forward.   In times of difficulty, including unemployment and job search, it is imperative to have good friends around you. Friends not only act as great emotional support, but they are also trustworthy people to bounce ideas off of, to make sure youre making smart decisions! Claire Dunphy says… Be Flexible! Modern Family’s Claire Dunphy began to feel stir crazy as all of her children became teenagers and grew increasingly self-sufficient.   She had quit her job to stay home with her children, and now they didnt need her so much. So, Claire decided to re-enter the workforce by accepting a job working for a local real estate agent. However, on her very first day of work, she quit! Claire claimed that she would never go back and work for such a difficult manager (good thing she found out what the manager was like on the first day!). Having had such a bad experience when she re-joined the workforce, it would have been understandable for Claire to feel totally discouraged and give up, but she was determined. Eventually, she accepted a job at her father, Jay’s small business called “Closets, Closets, Closets”.   While it wasn’t her first choice of jobs, Claire was open to trying something new, even if it meant working for dear old Dad. And it was a wild success! When looking for your next opportunity, don’t shut the door on jobs that you wouldn’t necessarily apply for, even if it means working for family or good friends. Sometimes, knowing the right person gets your foot in the door, and it turns out to be a great fit! Think outside the box, stay flexible, and always be open to trying new things.
