Whenever you ask people to rate the challenges or difficulties of their jobs, you need to take the responses with a pinch of salt. However, you can get an overall impression of what it takes to work in certain positions. Here are the top 10 most demanding jobs in tech based on surveys by Emerson Network Power and CareerCast. The surveys take into account leadership, on-call time, travel, physical demands, and multitasking, to name a few. Results are in no particular order. Chief Information Officers: As the top IT professional in most organizations, the Chief Information Officer (CIO) must be available at all times. That includes weekends and vacations so that they can handle emergencies. Motivating employees and building a strong IT department is on the top of most CIOs list of on-the-job demands.IT Procurement Specialists: The titles vary, ranging from analysts and consultants to supervisors and buyers. Those responsible for IT procurement say they must work to their clients schedules and dont always have time to do their best work. Moreover, tight schedules leave little opportunity to research the latest technologies. IT Managers Directors: Few IT managers or directors work from 9 to 5. Equipment maintenance or software migrations are often done overnight or on weekends. Managers must be on hand to ensure problem-free outcomes. The person in this position is often responsible for the largest share of a companys IT budget and for most of the companys planning. Budget preparation and meetings mean a lot of late nights. The Bureau of Labor Statistics found approximately 24 percent of IT managers, directors, and CIOs work more than 50 hours each week. Operations Specialists: Their business cards may say, technician, analyst, manager or specialist. Regardless, those in daily IT operations work with restrictive deadlines and troubleshoot problems late into the night. Web Developer: The most stressful tech job on CareerCasts list was for web developers. The job is expected to grow 27 percent by 2024. That’s much faster than average, so skilled developers have to meet skyrocketing demand. Working on different projects at the same time is not unusual. The job has its rewards, though, with one SkilledUp survey reporting 88 percent of web developers are satisfied with their jobs.Network Administrator: Systems and networks carry any company, and as businesses grow, networks become larger and more complex. Demand for network admins is on the rise as firms invest in better systems. Network administrators need to have excellent communication skills to relay information to other teams. They are available 24/7 to handle emergencies, and they must be able to multitask and remain calm in high-stress situations. IT Security Specialists: IT security professionals ranked the highest in the Emerson Network Power survey because they need to make important decisions on the spot 89 percent agree or strongly agree with this description. More than half of IT security specialists believe their success depends on things outside their control. However, they are directly accountable for the security of company networks. Brawny Origami-Inspired Robots Brawny Origami-Inspired Robots Brawny Origami-Inspired Robots We often link being strong with being unyielding, but when researchers at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology wanted to make their soft robots stronger, they found that folding them was the way to go. The origami-inspired actuators the research team designed can lift as much as 1,000 times their own weight. These artificial muscles could soon find their way into wearable electronics, surgical equipment, or insect-like microbots. Anything thats foldable could be used for these actuators, says Daniel Vogt, research engineer at Harvard Universitys Wyss Institute, who was a co-author on a paper released about the actuators. Paper for origami is often what allows us to try some ideas and then move on to other materials. The researchers built artificial muscles using different flexible materials like paper, metal, and plastic sheets as a corrugated inner skeleton that could fold up into a specific shape. They encased the skeleton in a skin-like plastic casing, and when they applied a vacuum to the casing, air pressure would fold the flexible material into a much smaller volume. In one example, a zig-zag sheet of plastic was placed in a gripper, and applying a vacuum caused the sheet to slowly fold upward. Using the same process, the gripper could pull up the full weight of an automobile tire. The researchers also programmed the artificial musclesto pick up bananas and bottles. Some of the initial origami designs were tested on paper and then applied to metal or plastic sheets, Vogt says. Paper for origami is often what allows us to try some ideas and then move on to other materials, he says. There are various potential applications for these actuators as the technology unfolds. For instance, since these artificial muscles are both strong and supple, they could find use in industrial settings. In a car factory you dont want your gripper to touch the car because it is very expensive stuff, says Shuguang Li, a postdoctoral researcher at MIT and another co-author of the paper. For this kind of application, you can use our soft gripper to manipulate a product that is fragile or expensive. The researchers are adding the actuators to power gloves to supplement grip strength for those with muscle diseases. Although the design is derived from origami, dont look for paper to start folding itself into cranes. Origami geometry looks beautiful, but when you make something for engineering use, its a little overcomplex for the joints and connections. It sounds like an easy job, but it probably isnt a job at all. It is likely a scam, and one that could end up implicating you in a crime as well. These types of fake job postings are usually scams, so think twice before you apply. Legitimate companies handle payments, credit cards, and money transfer transactions directly online. There is no need for a third party to be involved, and you should never use your own bank account to conduct financial business for an employer. How Money Laundering Job Scams Work How do these scams work? Money laundering scams are some of the most common online job scams. Structuring is the practice of obscuring the origins of illegally obtained payments. The money is passed through a number of financial institutions in amounts small enough as to not attract the attention of regulatory bodies. Individuals are hired, often unaware that they are committing fraud, to move relatively small amounts of cash through their personal bank accounts in the guise of processing payments. Some things that could tip you off that something is amiss: Money launderers post jobs online offering lucrative work from home opportunities.  They send out emails saying they are hiring employees to help process payments or transfer funds.  They promise a percentage for you to use your personal bank account to collect payments and transfer them to the company.Very often, the fake employer says he is from a foreign country and thus cannot transfer funds himself, which is simply not true. Legitimate foreign companies do business in the U.S. all the time. Other Types of Fraudulent Financial Job Scams Money laundering is just one way that fraudulent employers can prey on job seekers looking for simple work from home jobs. Shell companies can be set up by individuals who counterfeit checks or cash and need to circulate it through legitimate accounts, again in amounts small enough as to not be flagged as suspicious by a financial institution. Identity thieves can use the personal information you supply when applying for a bogus job to hack their way into your accounts.   A few things that should indicate that you need to do some research and verify the legitimacy of a company:   You are asked to use your personal bank account to move what are actually stolen or bad checks, and have you keep a percentage of the money for yourself. When you deposit a bad or stolen check, you are liable to the bank. Not only will you have to pay the bank, but, because the money being transferred is typically stolen, you could be arrested for committing theft.An employer hires you for a fake job, but says he can only pay you via direct deposit. He will then ask for your account information and personal information. Rather than paying you, he will use this information to access your account. How to Avoid Money Job Scams Remember that you are in control of your job search. Take the appropriate steps every time you apply for a position. If the job looks too good to be true, be diligent in your research before you apply- because it may indeed be a financial scam. Money laundering, counterfeit, and fraud are crimes- and you can be held responsible for taking part in them, even if you weren’t told by your “employer” that what you were doing was illegal. Ignorance does not guarantee your innocence. Keep in mind: Thoroughly research companies before applying, especially if the job description includes third party money transfers.  Be aware that no legitimate company will ask you to transfer funds before meeting you in person and conducting a thorough interview and background check. Even then, it would be very unusual for third party financial transactions using your bank account to be part of a job description.While companies may offer to pay you via direct deposit, no company should ever require you to use direct deposit. Therefore, make sure you are confident of a companys legitimacy before providing them with personal information or handling money for the company. Use common sense. As part of this conversation,  an open letter of solidarity was posted in November on behalf of 700,000 female farmworkers to Hollywood employees dealing with sexual harassment.On Monday, producer Shonda Rhimes, director Ava DuVernay, showrunner Jill Soloway, and actresses America Ferrera and Reese Witherspoon were among 300 Hollywood figures who posted their reply to these farmworkers with an open letter and an initiative titled Time’s Up, which outlined how they would use their privileged platform to help employees who are not Hollywood famous deal with sexual harassment.“To every woman employed in agriculture who has had to fend off unwanted sexual advances from her boss, every housekeeper who has tried to escape an assaultive guest, every janitor trapped nightly in a bui lding with a predatory supervisor, every waitress grabbed by a customer and expected to take it with a smile, every garment and factory worker forced to trade sexual acts for more shifts, every domestic worker or home health aide forcibly touched by a client, every immigrant woman silenced by the threat of her undocumented status being reported in retaliation for speaking up and to women in every industry who are subjected to indignities and offensive behavior that they are expected to tolerate to make a living: We stand with you. We support you,”  the open letter states.How Time’s Up says it plans to help employees across all sectorsThe Time’s Up initiative includes a legal defense fund to protect less privileged victims of harassment. It is reportedly being backed by $13 million in donations and is being run by the National Women’s Law Center’s Legal Network for Gender Equity. Other action items are more symbolic, such as a request for women walking the Golden Globes  re d carpet to wear black to raise awareness of the legal defense fund and the movement.Although the movement’s ranks include A-list stars, Time’s Up is being run by a loose coalition of Hollywood employees in working groups with no central leader. The New York Times reports that meetings began in October to discuss problems and solutions to accused harassers like Weinstein. One working group oversaw a new commission led by Anita Hill to end sexual harassment in media and entertainment, while one is working on proposed legislation to stop nondisclosure agreements that conceal harassment.Time will tell if the movement can lead to lasting change, but members say that’s their overarching goal.  Maria Eitel, the co-chairwoman of the Nike Foundation, who has moderated Time’s Up meetings told the Times, “They didn’t come together because they wanted to whine, or complain, or tell a story or bemoan. And since more and more companies are relying on internships to recruit superstars at the entry-level, theres an ever-increasing need to develop internship programs that can evaluate a candidates true potential. For us, internships have never been about bringing a bunch of college kids in to make copies and coffee, said Rick Slater, managing member for Dixon Hughes, an accounting firm that employs 35-50 interns each summer. We consider the program an 8-week job interview. Structuring Your Internship Program Slater isnt alone. For most organizations, the main objective of their internship program is to convert talented grads into full-time employees. However, this doesnt have to be left to chance. As internships have become more sophisticated, so have the strategies designed to measure their success. When starting your own program, think about how many interns you can realistically keep busy for the programs duration. Once you have an official head count, its time to develop a series of measurable benchmarks. For example: Number of FTEs (full-time employees) from the program. Number of evaluations per intern from project supervisors. As a rule, interns should work with multiple managers. This will give you a broad range of feedback while allowing your newer staff to test-drive their leadership skills. Number of projects completed per intern. While difficult to quantify, you want to factor in a few projects that test your interns ability to think critically and work in teams. Of course there will be times when interns are required to make copies and coffee, but dont fall into the all-too-common trap of using your interns for grunt work only. Give them a balance of meaningful work and administrative tasks and see how they handle both. After you complete the benchmarks for your program, refer to them often to ensure youre staying on course. You have to keep going back to those original metrics, said John Flato, President of the consulting firm Campus Strategic Partners. Otherwise, how will you know if youre succeeding? Finding Intern Candidates Now that you have a skeleton in place regarding program benchmarks, its time to find your intern programs candidates. Since no single approach works for everyone, the best method is to try a few different tactics and see what sticks. Naturally, you can post available positions on sites like Monster, where they can be displayed on MonsterCollege, but you can also reach out to your local colleges and universities as well. Identify a handful of schools in your area and just call them up and tell them what youre looking for, said Ross Herosian who directs 150 interns per year at SIRIUS XM Radio. You can also host an information session on campus. You may only have a few people show up, but those who do will be passionate about your industry. Career fairs are another great place to meet potential candidates, but if you dont have the time or the budget for on-campus recruiting, you can ask faculty members for the names of their best students. Finally, dont forget about the power of Web 2.0 in recruiting. A dedicated careers webpage, Facebook profile, and Twitter account can be very influential megaphones when it comes to raising awareness of your opportunities. Efficiently Onboarding When it comes to orientation, the best companies have at minimuma series of team-building activities, a basics overview so interns know what to expect, and an appearance by key players in their organization. Also, dont forget to include some good, old-fashioned Professionalism 101 training. We take for granted that students should know how to dress and behave properly at work, says Herosian. But, like it or not, this is often what will teach them to know better. Whether your organization has been hosting internships for decades or your program is just getting off the ground, at the end of the day, most hiring managers are in agreement that itsone of the most powerful ways to make great new hires not to mention avoid a few bad ones. We see the highs and lows of the personal lives of all of these characters when they fall in love, out of love, make friends, lose friends, etc. but we also see them climb the corporate ladder, slide down, and attempt to climb back up! Some of the funniest moments on primetime have been when our favorite television characters have conquered the uncertain world of unemployment and job search. Don’t believe me?
